Black hurthlings (or black hobbits, in some earlier versions) are monsters in ADOM. Like their surface-dwelling brethren, black hurthlings are quite nimble but not very strong. The PC can make a black hurthling their companion by giving them a piece of fish meat.
When 'C'hatted to, non-hostile black hurthlings will mention the One Ring — which is a reference to J.R.R Tolkien's "The Hobbit"/"The Lord of the Rings" series ['hobbits' being the term given to hurthlings outside of Ancardia].
Level: 1, DV: 16, PV: 1, Hits: 7, Attacks: 1, Damage: 1-6. Speed: 100.
Hurthlings refuse to eat their evil brethren, unless they are starving. All other races have no problems eating black hurthlings.
This looks like a normal hurthling, but the hair is less curly and the grin is more surly. It is rumored that every now and then an evil force penetrates the peace of a hurthling community and infects a young hurthling, encouraging it to spend more time underground and away from the light. Eventually the afflicted hurthling stays away from the sun, seeking for something to fill the emptiness left without a community.
He has spent far too long dwelling in deep caves where right-thinking hurthlings do not belong, and is a corrupted parody of the hurthling race. He is short and ugly, with greyish, hairless skin. Even his toes are hairless! "Have you seen my ... birthday present?", he whines, and then he giggles to himself. Don't turn your back on him.
