Doppelgangers are monsters in ADOM that can mimic the PC. In ASCII-mode they are represented by an @ symbol of the same color as the PC. In tiles-mode they are represented by the same tile as the PC. The sprite on this page is only displayed when using monster detection.

They have a non-damaging extra attack that confuses the PC for one turn(since r68 1d2 turns [1]), and they deflect all missiles bar potions and thrown gold. Those two abilities mean that melee fighters and archers can have trouble fighting these monsters. Luckily, they tend to be weak enough to eventually kill anyway. Considerably more troublesome is the doppelganger lord, and the doppelganger king ranks among the greatest threats in the late game.
