The jet-black battle axe "Executor" is a non-guaranteed artifact weapon. It appears as a "jet-black battle axe" in its unidentified form, and is also distinguishable by its unusual weight. It ranks as one of the most powerful one-handed weapons in the game, and is also desirable for its excellent slaying powers.
As of version 1.0.0, killing monsters with Executor often yields the message "You hit the foo<...> and execute it/him/her".
Desirability
As well as having a high damage potential — especially as a one-handed weapon, which makes it further desirable as it can be used with a shield — Executor slays demons and humanoids. This class is made up of many of the most powerful monsters in the game including the greater balor, the minotaur emperor and the emperor moloch. The additional bonuses that the weapon provides — +3 to Strength and Speed, and resistance to shock, sleep, stunning and confusion attacks — make it all the better.
On the downside, it lowers DV and grants the cursed intrinsic whilst it is wielded. Unlike other cursing artifacts such as the Black torc, it is not autocursing.
Guaranteed/Common sources
Like other random artifacts, it is available as a precrowning gift, in a surge of power, in a greater vault, or very rarely as random loot — such as in Darkforge.
Additionally, Assassins and Duelists may receive it as a crowning gift.
