Black unicorns are monsters in ADOM. They are notable for being evasive and hardy, for frequently teleporting, and for having a considerably powerful melee attack. They also regenerate quickly. They tend not to make an appearance in dungeons until the mid-late game (although they may appear in the Dwarven Halls at any time); and appear in the wilderness once the PC has reached level 25.

They can be frustrating enemies to face due to their habits of teleporting away from the PC to heal their wounds when panicked; and moreover dangerous to weakened PCs trying to flee from encounters due to their tendencies to constantly teleport to the PC's vicinity to keep pursuing them. Due to the latter, they are extremely nasty for early-mid game PCs to encounter in the Dwarven Halls.

As beings of true chaos, PCs get a small alignment boost for killing black unicorns and non-chaotic PCs can exchange their corpses with Guth'Alak for potions of cure corruption. They are the only non-unique monsters in the game that can be used for the purpose of the latter.

Special abilities[]

Common stats[]

Level: 1, DV: 50, PV: 15, Hits: 350, Attacks: 1, Damage: 20-60. Speed: 100.

Corpse effects[]

Black unicorn flesh significantly corrupts the PC, so typically such corpses should only be eaten in an emergency. Non-chaotic PCs should try to bring their corpses to Guth'Alak instead of eating them.

Monster memory[]

A great creature similar to a horse (but with cloven hooves) bearing a long smooth horn on its forehead. It is completely black, and the blackness seems to radiate from its frame. Black unicorns are said to be the shadows of unicorns that have acquired shape and substance and now symbolize the powers of pure evil, as the white is the embodiment of pure goodness.
