Justifier ( ( )
Item289
Item Type Melee weapon
Artifact? Yes
Weight 60s
Danger Level 15
Material Iron

The holy avenger "Justifier" is an artifact in ADOM. In ADOM v 1.1.1 and some earlier versions, the artifact can only be generated by crowning.

Justifier is a one-handed sword that slays demons and undead. It also has special hidden properties that cause it to deal double damage when wielded by a Paladin, and half its expected damage output when wielded by other classes.[1] This property made it unfair for Priests to receive it as a crowning gift, so starting in 1.2.0 they can no longer do so [1].

In its unidentified form, Justifier appears as a 60s long sword. It is thus distinguishable from regular long swords by its unusual weight.

Desirability[]

Justifier is a truly excellent weapon in the rightful hands of a Paladin, and usually the best one-handed weapon they can get (definitely against demons and undead, anyway). For Priests prior to v 1.2.0, its damage potential was too mediocre to make a useful weapon. As of 1.2.0 any class can find it (e.g.) in a surge of power or as a precrowning gift; though similarly to Priests prior to 1.2.0, it is not very useful to all but Paladins.

Guaranteed/Common sources[]

In 1.1.1, it is a possible crowning gift for Paladins and Priests.

As of v. 1.2.0, it's a possible crowning gift only for Paladins. It can also be granted as a precrowning gift or a reward for making use of a potion of uselessness; generated in a surge of power or greater vault; or generated as random loot (albeit very rarely).

Greater Identify information[]

-------------------------------long sword --------------------------------

The long sword is actually a blessed holy avenger "Justifier"
(+4, 3d5+10) [+6, +2].
It is an artifact.

When wielded it modifies DV by +6 and PV by +2.
When used in melee combat it grants a +4 bonus to hit and causes 3d5+10
points of damage. When used as a missile it grants a -6 bonus to hit
and causes 3d5 points of damage.

It is a demon slayer.
It is an undead slayer.

Damage[]

  1. The fact that other classes suffer a damage penalty was confirmed by testing, in which a healer attacked monsters with an expected damage output of 3d5+15 (18-30) but failed to inflict any more damage than 15 (after adding target's PV and negating critical hits).
