Arrows are missiles that are used in conjunction with standard bow-type missile weapons: short bows (of accuracy), long bows (of accuracy/of hunting) and the artifact bow Sun's Messenger.

Arrows are roughly comparable to their quarrel counterparts (with both serving as basic ammunition for ranged attacks in ADOM). The following list contains main differences between the two types of ammunition:

  • Arrows are usually found more often, and come in larger quantities (via both random loot generation and ammunition created through the application of Fletchery); in addition, multiple common monsters can be milked for arrows, while only ratling archers and (greater) titans use quarrels for ranged attacks.
  • Quarrels feature slightly better base damage output than arrows.
  • Base arrows are made of wood, which makes them highly susceptible to item destruction. Arrows are also seemingly more likely to disappear when shot.

Desirability[]

Arrows are among the three most common types of ammunition in ADOM and thus are desirable for players wishing to utilize ranged missile attacks. As arrow-type slaying ammunition follows the same trend as generic arrow-type ammunition (lower base damage and durability), focusing on crossbow skills has a slight edge over focusing on bow skills for an average PC. However, bows are usually easier to train thanks to abundance of ammunition. The usual strategy for ranged missile combat is to invest in both weapon skills.

Guaranteed/Common Sources[]

Arrows can be obtained in the same manner as all generic loot. They can also be created from wooden sticks and logs using the Fletchery skill.

Kobolds, raiders, barbarians and barbarian leaders can be milked for arrows and have a chance to drop a stack of ammunition when killed. The latter two types of monsters appear as wilderness encounters providing an almost infinite supply if the player is willing to spend enough in-game time and food.

Hawkslayer shoots eternium arrows.
