The medium obsidian shield "Protector" is an artifact shield that provides the highest DV of any shield in the game. It has useful, albeit not extraordinary, intrinsics.
Protector's unidentified form is "medium shield [46s]", but it can be distinguished from medium eternium shields by its darker color in ASCII and its unique tile.
Desirability[]
It's obviously very desirable for anyone wielding a one-handed weapon or engaging in magical combat. Protector combined with another shield can certainly allow a huge amount of defence, although spellcasters won't get as much benefit from dual-wielding shields as of 1.2.0 since this prevents spellcasting. Since shields don't interfere with true berserking, PCs dependent on it may still make use of Protector.

It can be generated in the same manner as all random artifacts, including precrowning and several methods of loot generation. As all artifacts, it cannot be wished for. It is a possible crowning gift for Fighters and Weaponsmiths.
