Gives a chance to create some gems when walls are mined by character or monsters.
This skill is used to identify gems and separate them from worthless pieces of glass.
Gives a chance to identify gem on pick up.
With gemology at zero, no gems are generated. With skill at 100, on test about half of digs resulted in gems.
In practice it has been shown that gemology at 100 and no mining not only easily covers pickaxe fixing with Glod but can lead to relatively easy crowning and heaps of crystals...
The skill is trained whenever gems are dug up (even if this is done by a monster!). Probably identifying unknown gems (but these need to be dug first, anyway).
