Khelavaster is a sage who recognized the existence of corruption and chaos in the world and traced its origin to a dungeon in the Drakalor Chain. Venturing alone, a good bit before the PC has arrived in the chain, he will be found sitting on the stairs in a state of perpetual near-death on D:16, surrounded by a horde of Chaos servants. He will remain on the stairs unless he is interacted with. Due to his location on the stairs, the PC will not be able to descend further into the dungeon until Khelavaster either dies or the PC manages to save his life (after which he disappears).
Upon (c)hatting with Khelavaster, he will reveal that the source of chaos and corruption is the chaos gate—a portal connecting the corrupted realm of chaos to Ancardia, located deep within the dungeon—and charges the player to close the Chaos Gate, for which (s)he needs to recover the five Elemental Chaos Orbs. He will then die, leaving behind assorted items of generally limited quality: including a robe, wand of digging, an eternium dagger and a potion of invisibility. Many of these items are also cursed. Note that while monsters will not attack Khelavaster directly, he only has 1 HP, so he is highly vulnerable to death by bolt or ball spells used by the PC. As of v. 1.2.0 he cannot be killed by vortices, and fireball traps can no longer be spawned on D:16, to give the player a fairer chance to get to interact with him given his significance in the game
Players wishing to pursue ultra endings or achieve Paragon of Order status must not allow Khelavaster to die; rather, they must scour the various available areas for an amulet of life saving which must be 'g'iven or 't'hrown to him. Note that talking to him with the amulet in your possession will not save his life. The amulet is exceptionally rare and, in practice, it is often easier to hunt for a wish to get it, since there are several means to get these, most notably by drinking from the pools in Darkforge or other locations.
Upon receiving the amulet of life saving, Khelavaster will still explain the main quest (albeit much more coherently) and reward the PC with several high-quality items: including 6 blessed scrolls of corruption removal, a spellbook of Teleportation, a spellbook of Identify and 4 blessed potions of ultra healing (in addition to the eternium dagger and wand of digging, which will now be blessed instead of cursed). These rewards are considered by many players to be well worth the cost of a wish, particularly for semi-casters who will have an otherwise difficult time finding the very desirable spellbook of Teleportation; the scrolls of corruption removal are also considered extraordinarily valuable, particularly for ultra endings, since the PC tends to accrue more corruption this way than when closing the Chaos Gate. By comparison, a wish for "scrolls of corruption removal" only results in two, so the six scrolls alone account for three wishes.
If his life is saved, Khelavaster will make his way back to Terinyo, although this apparently takes some time, because he does not appear to be in the town until after the PC is level 30. In ADOM v 1.1.1, he maintains an invisibility spell on himself; this can be annoying for experienced PCs lacking the see invisibility intrinsic since they may randomly bump into Khelavaster and attack him, which will simultaneously enrage all of the inhabitants of Terinyo and make the sage himself hostile, which may deny access to the Trident of the Red Rooster. It is possible to calm hostile NPCs, so in practice this disastrous situation may be salvageable. The fact that Khelevaster turns himself invisible after he is saved was revealed to be a bug, and fixed in 1.2.0.
