Rings of mental stability increase Learning while worn, typically by +1 (although other values, even as high as +8, have been observed). They also grant resistance to confusion and modify the PC's DV and PV, typically by [+0, +1] (again, other values, including negative, are possible).


Quite useful when facing monsters with confusion attacks, both for increasing the chance to resist the attack and drastically shortening the duration of the effect. Many powerful wielders of magic (Nuurag-Vaarn, Ancient Chaos Wyrm, emperor liches, minotaur mages, etc.) can employ confusion from afar, and getting confused by a doppelganger king can be a death sentence.

Besides that, rings of mental stability are among the few non-artifact rings that increase both an attribute and DV/PV (although, sadly, these bonuses can't be modified by scrolls of defense, protection, or Smithing). As such, they basically amount to three or four early-game rings combined into one. Rings with high Learning bonuses (+3 or more) are particularly useful for almost any character, and remain so throughout the entire game, making RoMS a great fallback option if one fails to obtain the ring of the master cat or the ring of immunity.
