Staff of the archmagi ( ( )
Item Type Melee weapon
Artifact? Yes
Weight 40s
Danger Level Unknown
Material Wood

The staff of the archmagi is a random artifact. It has stats of (+5, 5d2+2) [+9, +0], adds +10 to Mana and grants resistance to acid, sleep and confusion attacks. When zapped, the staff allows the PC to cast an Improved Fireball. The fireball has a base cost of 90 PP, which is affected by spellcasting cost reductions, as well as the PC's Improved Fireball spell knowledge. Zapping the staff will cost 180 PP for PCs that don't know the spell and have no spell cost reductions. Like the spell, it costs more PP the further away it is targeted.

Staff of the archmagi benefits from the same recharge time reductions as magic staves.

While carrying a potent bonus to Mana, it is a staff; staves are not generally considered worthwhile for spellcasters since while they offer significant DV bonuses, they are all two-handed, forbidding the use of a shield, virtually destroying the possible DV benefit. At the same time, even the best staves, including the staff of the archmagi, are very poor in damage compared to even many of the decent one-handed weapons. While the Mana bonus does help spellcasting, the fact that spells can be cast from health in close situations makes it rather inconsequential. The ability to cast improved fireballs is useful in some situations, but several monsters are immune to fire magic and the classes that can be crowned with it usually have plenty of options for killing monsters with magic anyway.

Guaranteed/Common sourcesEdit

It can be generated in the same manner as all random artifacts, including precrowning and several methods of loot generation. It is a possible crowning gift for Elementalists, Necromancers and Wizards.
