|Stethoscope ( ] )|
Stethoscopes can be used to determine various statistics about living monsters, with more statistics being displayed for blessed stethoscopes then uncursed.
Notice that status of stethoscope is revealed after using it first time. Also some monsters [primary undead and constructs] are immune to it.
Statistics from an uncursed stethoscope follow this format:
You examine the orc scorcher. Your diagnosis: DV: 12, PV: 1, Hits: 9.
Statistics fom a blessed stethoscope typically follow this format:
You examine the orc scorcher. Diagnosis: Level: 1, DV: 12, PV: 1, Hits: 9, Attacks: 1, Damage: 2-7. Speed: 100.
Cursed stethoscopes give the message "The stethoscope seems to be plugged." when you attempt to use them.
Note that healers, and healers only, can use a stethoscope "as a free action" - no time will pass when using one.
They are helpful for any player especially since they can be used to detect secret doors ["sounds hollow"] and approximate number of monsters behind door. "Silence" means corridor with or without monsters. "You hear nothing" - empty room "You hear some low-volume sounds", "You hear some sounds", "You hear many sounds", "You hear lots of sounds" means some monsters in room.
They can be generated in the same manner as all generic loot.
Healers always start with a stethoscope, and it is possible to get a stethoscope from Jharod, by having Healing and bringing Yrrigs to him. It is also possible to gain one from mad doctor for killing Jharod and having healing. This stethoscope is not always cursed.
