Thugs are summoned whenever a shop is robbed by the player (save for Waldenbrook's store in Dwarftown and the Great Gift Shoppe in the casino, which summon muscular dwarves and casino guards respectively). They also appear randomly in dungeons starting from the midgame, albeit rarely.
Thugs are notable for having poisonous attacks. Thugs are often surprisingly tough — considering how ambiguous the term is in describing the monster, and how loosely the term can be used in real life (for example, it is surprising that in ADOM there is a greater chance of the PC being killed by a 'thug' than by an assassin).

Thugs are 'very tough' food. Eating them has no ill effects for any PCs. The corpses of thugs can also be given to Tywat Pare for a bounty of 20 gold.
A brutish figure dressed in black leather steps forward to block your path, a grotesque leering grimace permanently inscribed on the thug's face as a scarified souvenir of desperate street-fight. The thug holds out a hand, palm up, and judging from what little you can make out of the expression, "No" will not be a satisfactory reply.
