Tract of balance is a type of book in ADOM. Each time one is read successfully (which usually takes over 100 turns) it will increase piety with neutral deity, reduce piety towards other two deities and draw alignment towards N= (reading it can be chaotic act if alignment is above N=).
Changes in piety can cause divine retribution, but having high piety with character's deity typically prevents that. Piety status of 'very close' is recommended for studying scripts.
Desirability[]
There is no real reason to read tracts of balance, as risk of divine retribution outweighs potential piety gains. They can be safely transformed into spellbooks with potion of raw chaos if area's DL is lower than two.
