As of r89, shopkeepers no longer gain levels from sis, and the amount of levels gained from a single kill is capped between 1 and 5. This makes the technique impractical outside of shoplifting, or scumming for high score at level 50.

Unlike most residents of Dwarftown, Waldenbrook may be sacrificed on the Dwarftown altar. This can be taken advantage of to acquire the items he is selling, and to gain a massive amount of experience.

Preliminary steps[]

Preparing a Neutral altar[]

As a shopkeeper, Waldenbrook is Neutral. The PC receives a warning the first time they attempt to sacrifice a co-aligned monster on a Neutral altar. When sacrificing Waldenbrook this extra turn could prove fatal, so the PC should first trigger this warning by attempting to sacrifice another Neutral monster.

Leveling up Waldenbrook[]

Waldenbrook gains 4 + (PC's level)/2 levels every time he is sold an artifact. At level 3000, sacrificing Waldenbrook gives enough experience for a low-experience race/class combination to reach level 50; at level 5000, sacrificing Waldenbrook gives enough experience for most non-troll PCs to reach level 50.

Getting such high levels is possible by selling Sis, either by selling a huge stack of them one-by-one, or by repeatedly buying and reselling them. Dwarf and gnome PCs who successfully use Haggling can buy and resell a cursed Si at a loss of only around 30gp. Merchants and high-Appearance females of these races can even make a profit by buying and reselling stacks of Sis.

Sacrificing techniques[]

A super high leveled Waldenbrook will be able to instantly kill the PC with their gold piece missile attack and in melee. In addition, as a diagonal monster Waldenbrook will normally avoid stepping onto the Dwarftown altar. A minimum of two doors created from wands of door creation are necessary to deal with these issues. Angry Dwarftown residents are also useful in order to anger Waldenbrook from outside of his line of sight. These residents can either be lured up a level and attacked, or attacked with non-lethal means in Dwarftown itself.

To maximize the chances of success, Ruun will need to be moved out of the altar room, either by teleportation or by angering him and luring him away. The h shown in the picture is an angered Dwarftown resident who is killed in order to anger Waldenbrook. Some gold should be left on the altar, so that Waldenbrook might waste a turn picking it up. Around 95% of the time Waldenbrook will move onto the altar and be able to be sacrificed.

Locked doors[]

The left doors can be locked with tiny and small keys, and the right doors can be locked with round and triangular keys. Alternatively, a wand of trap creation can be used to lock the doors. The hs shown in the picture are angered Dwarftown residents; one is killed to anger waldenbrook, and the other is used to barricade the PC in the same position as is shown in the unlocked doors picture. Dwarven guardians should not be used for this, as they are capable of breaking down doors. Ruun does not need to be moved out of the altar room for this technique. Waldenbrook is virtually guaranteed to step onto the altar eventually.
