|Wand of digging ( \ )|
Wands of digging will, when "z"apped, allow the player to quickly clear a path through walls in any of the eight directions. In the ninth direction, "5", it will create a pit in the ground, also digging any graves that may be present on that square.
This wand has a range of 7/5/3 for B/U/C respectively. Additional 1 range is added for each 10 character levels.
They don't seem to generate gems or stone giants like using a pick axe may do.
The 'digging beam' projected by the wand also deals considerable damage (possibly depending on B/U/C status of the wand) to monsters made of stone, if they are within range of the beam. These monsters are: earth elementals, greater earth elementals, stone snakes, stone grues, living walls, stone golems, stone statues and wall beasts. This generates message "You punch a hole into the x" if in the line of sight, when out of LOS, the message is "You hear a crunching sound!". Killing the monster with it generates "The x is shattered!" (assuming monster is seen by the PC). Wands of digging do not damage the Ancient Stone Beast.
They are very useful for entering the different elemental temples or royal vaults, or creating a escape route if surrounded by monsters (or cats) on a tight spot. Whilst they can be used for grave robbing, generally a pick axe is more efficient for this. Their ability to damage stone monsters also comes in quite useful, seeing as most of these are quite resistant to melee attacks and bolt spells.
They can be generated in the same manner as all generic loot. Thrundarr will give one as part of the reward for the Portal quest. Wands of digging are also frequently dropped by dwarven chaos knights.
